Humidity changes the alignment of our hair.
Each hair has an outer cuticle of overlapping cells. When that surface becomes weathered or lifted, humidity can be absorbed unevenly. Some sections swell more than others and push hairs out of alignment. That's frizz.
Three factors can contribute: scalp conditions, reduced natural lubrication from sebum, and UV damage to the cuticle.

Natural lubrication slows
Sebum lubricates and smooths our hair. As sebum production naturally slows after our 40s, our hair loses protective slip. Without that natural lubrication, the cuticle becomes rougher. Humidity makes the rough areas swell, pushing hairs out of alignment and creating frizz.
Sunlight weathers the cuticle
Melanin helps shield hair from UV exposure. As hair becomes white, less pigment means less natural protection, especially for exposed top layers.
