The Problem with Purple Shampoos

Purple shampoo sounds like a good idea...

Silver, gray, and white hair can pick up warm tones. Purple helps neutralize them. Use shampoo to deposit temporary color on the hair. Simple, right?

Then why do women have such a hard time finding one that doesn’t dry out their hair or actually suit their tonal needs??

Because it’s not that simple.

Women choose shampoos and conditioners based on how those products perform on their particular hair

Even though we’re silvering, our hair is still uniquely ours: straight, wavy, curly, or coily; fine or thick; healthy, dry, or damaged. It also behaves differently depending on climate, water, and environment.

That’s why a shampoo that performs beautifully on one woman’s hair may be completely wrong for another.

Women choose their regular haircare based on how it performs on their unique combination of hair needs.  (That’s why the shampoo aisle is sooooo long.)

Toning is a separate variable.

The amount of violet pigment needed depends on what is being corrected.

A dye grow-out with orange warmth needs far more counteraction than a bit of dull yellowing from hard water, sun, or pollution. Sometimes the goal is active neutralizing.

Sometimes it’s just gentle brightening.

Porosity and texture also affect how much tone the hair will grab and hold.

Here's the flaw:

Traditional purple shampoos try to address all of those variables with one static formula: one cleansing base and one fixed level of violet pigment.

❌ A static shampoo base simply can’t suit every hair type, texture, condition, and environment

❌ A static pigment level doesn’t address all neutralizing needs and can be too much for some hair, leaving a purple cast, or too little for others, doing very little and leading to overuse

This is why the experience of purple shampoo varies so much from woman to woman and why so many women find purple shampoos ineffective, too purple or 'drying'.

That is exactly the problem we looked at when we created Tonal Control.

A modern, more logical solution for silvers.

Tonal Control is a concentrated violet toning mix.

Instead of forcing you into a shampoo base chosen for its pigment, it lets you keep using the shampoo, conditioner, or cream-based styler that already works on your hair

You add the tone separately and adjust it to suit your needs.

  • It recognizes that haircare needs are individual
  • It recognizes that toning needs are individual
  • It stops accepting the notion that one static purple shampoo can meet both perfectly for everyone

This more modern way of toning delivers results women can actually see,  which is why it’s starting to win over salon pros and earn industry recognition.

➕ Plus Tonal Control adds a hit of shine and nutrients to enhance whatever product you're using as a base

Who doesn't want that?
