Frizz explained.

What frizz is, three contributing factors, and how targeted care can help.

Frizz explained

What is frizz, anyway?

To understand frizz, we have to look closely at the surface of the hair. Every hair is covered by a cuticle, made of tiny overlapping cells, rather like shingles on a roof.

When the surface is smooth and the hairs lie together, light reflects evenly. When sections of the cuticle are weathered or lifted, humidity can be absorbed unevenly along the hair shaft. Some areas swell more than others, pushing individual hairs out of alignment. That is frizz.

Frizzy isn't a hair type. It's a surface condition.

Curly hair can be smooth. Straight hair can be frizzy. What matters is the condition of the surface and how the individual hairs sit against one another.

Why our hair becomes more vulnerable

Three contributing factors. Each calls for a different kind of care.

01 / Scalp health

Hair forms at the scalp. A healthy scalp supports stronger, more resilient growth. Resilient hair withstands everyday wear and weathering, helping preserve a smoother cuticle and resist frizz.

02 / Sebum

Sebum lubricates our hair, maintaining softness and reducing friction. As sebum production naturally slows after our 40s, our hair loses some of that protective slip. Rougher surfaces absorb humidity unevenly, increasing frizz.

03 / UV exposure

Melanin helps protect hair from UV exposure. As hair turns white, it loses pigment protection. Sunlight weathers the exposed cuticle, leaving it vulnerable to uneven humidity absorption and frizz.

How Silvering products are developed to combat our kind of frizz

Each product addresses a different contributing factor, from the scalp where new hair grows to the surface and sun-exposed areas of the hair we have today.

Stronger hairs start with a healthier scalp

Root Rouser works upstream, at the scalp, because a healthy scalp grows stronger hair, and stronger hairs are less vulnerable to the dryness and damage that lead to lifted cuticles and frizz.

As a scalp massage serum, Root Rouser works in two ways: through massage, which promotes circulation and brings much-needed blood flow to the follicle; and through a curated blend of colorless actives and nutrients that support growth, micro-circulation, and optimal scalp health.

Shine & Define helps patch the parts of the hair where frizz starts

Shine & Define works on the longer, more exposed sections of the hair shaft, where damage has had more time to build up.

Its clear, silicone-free shine system uses lightweight emollients to replace slip; film-forming polymers to leave a more even coating over weathered cuticle; and jojoba oil plus vitamin E to support a smoother, more protected surface.

Shine & Define doesn't just make hair shiny, it helps patch the exact surface conditions that let moisture into damaged areas and push hairs out of smooth alignment.

3. Sun Stick: protect, condition and smooth our most exposed hairs.

Our outermost hairs, especially along the part, hairline and top layers, take the most direct sunlight. With less melanin to shield white hair from UV exposure, the cuticle becomes more vulnerable to weathering. These are the hairs that show dryness, roughness, flyaways and frizz first.

Sun Stick is a targeted UV hair shield that helps protect these exposed hairs against further sun damage. It also conditions hair that is already dry and weathered, bringing back softness and smoothing roughness. Its styling hold helps control the flyaways and frizz on our outermost hairs, keeping them aligned while we enjoy the sun. Coming soon.

Three products. Three distinct jobs.

Root Rouser supports the scalp. Shine & Define nourishes and smooths the weathered hair shaft. Sun Stick is designed for the exposed hairs at the part, hairline and top layers.

The point isn't to treat frizz as a hair type that needs fixing. It's to understand our hair, then choose care that makes sense for it.
